As a tribute to the life and work of the late Dr Walter Rodney, the new National Archives will be named after him upon its completion and there will be a scholarship to the University of Guyana for one student per year in his name.

President Bharrat Jagdeo made these announcements at a press conference held at the Office of the President on Monday.

"I think that it would be most appropriate given his role as a distinguished historian," Jagdeo said on the Archives being named after Rodney. There are plans to locate the National Archives in a building being constructed near the National Cultural Centre.

Jagdeo said the scholarship will be funded by the Government of Guyana and awarded on an annual basis. He said the basis for selection could possibly be an essay competition.

He added that the organising committee of the yearly Walter Rodney lecture series had approached him on the matter of the scholarship and it was favourably considered. And as part of the commemoration activities, there will be a sitting of the National Assembly to deliberate on the period in which he lived and his assassination.

The renowned historian and academic died 25 years ago Monday when a walkie-talkie exploded in his lap as he sat in a car on Bent Street behind the Camp Street jail.

During the past week a series of `groundings' on Walter Rodney's life has been held in various locations.
