A STATEMENT
BY Akima McPherson

When I was asked to participate in this exhibition commemorating and honouring the life and works of Dr. Walter Rodney I really hesitated, "hummed and hawed," debated with myself as to the relevance of my work in being synchronistic with his ideas: Like so many young Guyanese I am only generally au fait with his work and, therefore, did not want my contribution to be inappropriate.

While my efforts in painting are not characterized by overt socio-political activism, I would like to think they make poignant statements - are activists in their own right - about self-healing/spiritual self-emancipation/spiritual journeying as it is my firm belief that we must begin with the individual if we are to create a better world….

The painting I have chosen for inclusion is dear to my heart. It is an effort to interpret visually the Chakra philosophical system and a cry for healing, for journeying despite inner chaos. It is a cry to deal with the Self in crisis so as to safeguard the environment (human, botanical, etc.) from the explosion inevitable from crisis. This painting, "Untitled/Chakra Meditation," is being re-presented on this occasion as we honour the life and work of a man who strove to manifest a better world…and as we engage in discourse on issues of relevance. It is being re-presented as a Tribute to Dr. Walter Rodney and in support of these Groundings.
